Then and Now...

While a much younger village compared to its sister community of Morne Jaune, Riviere Cyrique also shares a vibrant and unique history.

Before the 1950's, the village of Riviere Cyrique did not exist and there were only a few scattered families living in the area. At that time children here would walk down to Rosalie to go to school. However, in a matter of a few short years, the population would grow significantly when Messers. Tabor and Leach evicted families that had been living on the nearby Rosalie Estate. Those evicted had resided there for generations since their ancestors had been emancipated in 1833. Now they were forced to dismantle their houses and a once thriving community was now torn apart. Many of them moved a mile south to this area of ridges and deep valleys above the Atlantic Ocean.

Today, a peaceful village composed of several different neighbourhoods, Riviere Cyrique is a quiet farming community. Almost any tropical fruit or crop that you can think of is probably grown here....from giant Avocados (known as 'pears' here) to juicy Tangarines. The most important crops for our farmers are bananas and root crops. With the recent decline in bananas however, an increasing portion of our community commutes to work in Roseau on a daily basis. Common names include: Lawrence, George, Jno. Baptiste, and Cuffy.
